Mnambithi TVET College recently hosted an essential joint workshop at Mountain View Lodge joined by guests from Majuba TVET College about Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), strengthening both institutions commitments to data privacy, transparency, and good governance. The session brought together staff and administrators eager to understand their right and responsibilities under these critical laws.
The training was expertly led by Ms. Seipati Ramasia and Mr. Dennis Mstweni, who provided clear, practical guidance on how both Acts function in real-world settings. They explained POPIA’s role in safeguarding personal data, emphasizing lawful processing, consent, and security. They also detailed how PAIA enables individuals to access information, promoting accountability and open administration. Together they highlighted the balance between privacy and transparency, POPIA protects personal information, while PAIA ensures access to information in the public interest.
Participants learned how to handle data responsibly, respond to information requests, and uphold ethical standards across college operations. Thanks to their insightful facilitation staff left the session better equipped to apply these principles in daily practice. This dual focus on protection and access marks a significant step towards a more informed, compliant, and trustworthy institutions. The workshop went beyond theory, it sparked meaningful conversations about ethic, accountability, and the rights of individuals within institutions. Staff engaged in discussions on real-life scenarios, such as how to handle student recorder under POPIA and how to process PAIA requests from members of the public.
Privacy and access are two sides of the same coin one protects dignity, the other empowers justice. With dedicated training and committed leadership, Mnambithi TVET College and is paving the way for a culture where information is both safeguarded and shared responsibly.
