22 May 2025 we visited Bhevu High School in Roosboom. We spent the morning demystifying the world of vocational training, with a particular focus on the National Certificate (Vocational) – NCV – programs. This initiative underscores the critical importance of early engagement between TVET colleges and high schools, ensuring students are aware of all their post-matric options.
During the session, the Grade 10 learners were introduced to the diverse range of NCV programs offered at Mnambithi TVET College spanning fields such as Electrical Infrastructure Construction, Office Administration, Finance, Economics & Accounting, Information Technology & Computer Science, and Hospitality. The presentation highlighted how these programs are designed to equip students with practical, industry-specific skills, making them highly sought after in the job market.
A key focus of the discussion was to dispel common misconceptions surrounding vocational education. Many students, and often their parents, mistakenly believe that TVET colleges are a "second choice" or only for those who don't excel academically. NCV programs are a distinct and equally valuable pathway, tailored for students who thrive in hands-on learning environments and are eager to gain practical competencies that lead directly to employment or entrepreneurial ventures.
NCV offers a direct route to gaining specialized skills that are in high demand in our economy. It's about empowering them to become skilled artisans, technicians, and administrators who contribute directly to the growth of our communities.
Students learned about the integrated nature of NCV programs, which combine theoretical knowledge with extensive practical training. This approach ensures graduates are not only academically sound but also job-ready, with real-world experience. The benefits of an NCV qualification were clearly articulated:
* Direct entry into the workforce: NCV graduates are equipped with specific skills that make them employable immediately upon completion.
* Addressing skills shortages: These programs directly respond to the critical need for skilled professionals in various sectors, contributing to economic development.
* Pathways to further education: An NCV Level 4 certificate is equivalent to a Matric certificate and can open doors to further studies at TVET colleges or even some university programs.
* Practical, hands-on learning: Ideal for students who prefer a practical approach to education and enjoy learning by doing.
* Entrepreneurial opportunities: Many NCV fields provide the foundational skills for students to start their own businesses.
The engagement session concluded with a lively Q&A, where students enthusiastically inquired about specific courses, application procedures, and career prospects. The visit by Mnambithi TVET College to Bhevu High School serves as a vital reminder that providing comprehensive career guidance at an early stage is instrumental in shaping the future of South Africa's youth, offering them diverse and meaningful pathway.
